Morningside University’s Sharon Walker School of Education seeks a forward-thinking, team-oriented Department Head to provide
leadership in collaboration with the Dean, faculty, and staff of the School to advance the vision and mission for the entire unit.
The Sharon Walker School of Education focuses exclusively on preparing future educators and providing advanced study for current
educators, serving more than 1,000 students each year across undergraduate, adult, and graduate programs both on campus and online. The
School offers traditional initial licensure programs for undergraduate students in elementary and secondary education, as well as 12 MAT
programs, including 3 initial licensure degree programs, and 15 advanced practice endorsements and educational strands. Morningside
University is one of two institutions in the state of Iowa approved to offer initial licensure through the Iowa Teacher Intern program.
Enrollments are thriving in these accelerated adult and alternative route programs.
The Department Head is a full time, tenure-track
faculty member with teaching assignments in undergraduate, and/or graduate programs in the School, who also executes administrative duties
to assist the Dean in the academic operations of the School, and provides guidance for faculty and support for students.
This is a
12-month, full time, tenure track position located on campus, with an annual teaching load of 16 credits assigned across the fall, spring,
and/or summer terms as appropriate. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2023.
Responsibilities:

Teach general secondary education courses for undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in traditional and non-traditional (alternative
route – teacher intern) initial licensure programs, delivering instruction both face-to-face and online.
· Advise and
mentor students, participate in service to the unit and university, and engage in professional development.
· Oversee
programmatic assessment and compliance, in collaboration with the dean, program coordinators, and faculty across the unit.

Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of teacher preparation curriculum for all programs across the unit.
· Guide, support, evaluate, and advocate for full time faculty.
· Assist in the onboarding and mentoring of full and
part-time faculty.
· In consultation with the Dean, review and monitor budgets, plan master course schedules, and recommend
faculty load assignments.
· Collaborate with the Dean, Director of Operations and Program Coordinators in the review and
update of departmental handbooks, policies, and procedures for undergraduate and graduate programs.
· Assist in the
preparation of state and federal reports and accreditation documentation.
· Collaborate with content area faculty and K-12
partners as appropriate.
· Lead external advisory board meetings.
Qualifications:
· An
earned doctorate in curriculum and instruction, education, or closely related field.
· Secondary education licensure and
teaching experience in grades 5-12.
· Outstanding educational and instructional technology skills, experience using learning
management systems, electronic portfolio systems, and remote learning platforms.
· Additional licensure/endorsements in
literacy, ESL, middle level, special education, or educational administration, preferred.
· Prior experience in online
teaching, adult education, and/or graduate programs, preferred.
· Demonstrated experience and/or commitment to creating
inclusive learning environments and curricula for a diverse student body, including awareness of current practices that support
underrepresented populations, preferred.
· Prior teaching experience in higher education teacher preparation programs,
preferred.
· Preference given to candidates who have experience in education administration and/or higher education
leadership.
