Position description
Principal responsibilities include oversight of daily operations, the identification, collection, processing, and shipment of radioactive and/or hazardous wastes and associated recordkeeping at the Mayo Clinic outbuildings includeing Marvin Building, Superior Drive Support Center, and the SEMN Mayo Clinic Health Systems. Position requires a high level of customer interaction and the ability to meet the needs of the customer while maintaining compliance with applicable regulations. The individual signs hazardous waste manifests and other documents related to shipment of hazardous or radioactive wastes. The individual would schedule shipments with vendors for hazardous and radioactive waste shipments from all the Mayo Clinic Rochester owned generators. Hazardous and Radioactive Waste Specialist works with Supervisor to resolve complex issues, maintain system integrity, adapt to system changes, respond to emergency situations, counsel employees, and make hiring decisions.

Qualifications
A Bachelor Degree in chemistry, physics, environmental, or earth science, obtained within 2 years of hire and 3 years relevant work experience is required. An Associate degree with 5 years of relevant experience will be considered. Hazardous and Radioactive Waste Specialist Test.

Additional qualifications
Experience should include leadership, team building, and problem-solving skills as well as a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple disciplines (i.e. physician, administrative, supervisory, and allied health staff). Knowledge of hazardous materials radiation safety, chemical safety, industrial hygiene, or radioactive/hazardous waste management as appropriate to position. A working knowledge of USDOT, USEPA, and MPCA rules is a plus. Must have strong communication (both verbal and written), organizational, public speaking and human relation skills. Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changing work schedules and environment. Must have knowledge of PC and ability to use routine computer software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, and databases).

License or certification
Minnesota CDL with Hazardous Materials Endorsement within 90 days of hire. Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) required within two years of starting the position.
