Regulatory/Quality Management
Implements and monitors quality assurance systems to ensure high level of performance and ensures corrective action is taken to correct the system when any result deviates from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. Ensures that all records and reports are prepared and utilized according to established policy.
Oversees all quality control procedures, oversees maintenance on instruments and may troubleshoot instrument malfunctions. Follows laboratory survewillance policies including review of testing, calibrations and quality control on a daily basis. Immediately reports all significant quality control problems or failures to Laboratory Supervisor(s), Technical Director and Laboratory Director(s). Provides written monthly quality control report to Laboratory Supervisors, Technical Director and Laboratory Directors including corrective action.
Coordinates all CAP and non-CAP proficiency testing within lab area(s). Assures that tests are done and sent back in a timely manner. Submits survey results through electronic formats. Reviews and evaluates returned results with Laboratory Supervisors, Technical Director and Laboratory Directors and works with supervisor of area to initiate remedial corrective action and/or changes in procedures when necessary. Communicates final results from proficiency testing to laboratory staff.
Investigates and provides follow up for Safety Reports as requested.
Responsible for collating all data on instrument/reagent correlations and making sure that they are done on time.
Participates in health and safety education and competency activities and may function as the Laboratory Health & Safety Officer. Expected to have specific, detailed working knowledge of safety policies and procedures that are pertinent to their specific lab area(s). Recommends appropriate policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Responds to and promptly resolves all unsafe conditions. May provide appropriate training, equipment and education to protect staff and visitors from unsafe conditions.
Human Resources
Assigns work and reviews workflow, workload distribution and staffing patterns within the Core lab area(s). Develops or recommends solutions for problem areas as necessary.
Provides regular verbal and written feedback regarding employee performance to supervisors and may assist in preparation of performance evaluations of laboratory staff.
May assist in investigation and documentation of performance based issues/actions in conjunction with the Laboratory Supervisors, Technical Director, Laboratory Director(s), and Pathology HR generalist, as requested or applicable.
Training/Staff Development
Provides training for personnel in policy, technical methods and theory within lab area(s). Monitors performance and evaluates readiness of new personnel during training period. Ensures that all personnel are adequately trained and that they maintain their performance. Assists laboratory supervisors in development and implementation of internal competencies within laboratory area(s) and ensures that competency documentation is complete and up-to-date for lab area’s technologists.
Participates in teaching activities of Students, Residents and Fellows-in-Training and other members of the staff as requested by the Laboratory Supervisors, Technical Director and/or Laboratory Directors. These activities may include demonstrating laboratory techniques.
General Lab Operations
Expert resource/consultant for unusual/abnormal patient findings.
Writes initial draft of new procedures and updates of existing technical procedures. Ensures that changes and corrections to procedures are communicated to Laboratory Supervisors in a timely fashion.
Under the supervision of the Technical Director/Laboratory Directors, develops, validates and investigates new procedures, products and/or instrumentation. Assists Technical Director/Laboratory Directors with special projects as required.
Responsible for ensuring adequate stock of laboratory supplies in lab area(s) and communicates supply needs to laboratory support staff on a regular and timely basis.
Utilizes computer workstations to enter and retrieve pertinent laboratory reports and information.
Performs bench work, as necessary, approximately 20 – 50% of the time.

Capable of physical exertion including walking, standing, sitting and bending, lifting up to 10 lbs.
Able to work under stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy
Supervisory Responsibility
No direct reports. Supervises technical aspects of the lab.
Fiscal Responsibility
No direct fiscal responsibility.
Working Conditions
Working in a clinical laboratory, may be exposed to disease-bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals or fumes, other hazards normally associated with a clinical laboratory setting. Work environment may be noisy or crowded.
Responsible for the clinical results of patients from all age groups.Education
BS or BA in Science from an accredited college required. BS in Medical Technology preferred
Active national general certification or categorical certification in a relevant specialty
Experience
Minimum 6 years of progressively responsible experience. Demonstrated knowledge specific to the specialty
License, Certification, and/or Registration
Generalist or specialty certification from approved national accreditation agency required.
