The PD is responsible for overseeing the operational success of the Institute’s global research programs and training initiatives. The PD will strengthen scientific development, build long-term programmatic sustainability, and lead strategic planning for future global /U.S. scientific collaboration. They will be responsible for developing partnerships with external stakeholder to advance programmatic initiatives that support the strategic plan or newly identified funding opportunities.
The PD will work under the direction of both the Institute’s leadership in South Africa, Drs. Doug Kwon, Krista Dong, and Thumbi Ndung’u, and the Ragon’s Executive Director, Dr. Kristen Massimine. This individual will also work closely with existing international partner sites-including leadership at the Females Rising through Education, Support and Health (FRESH) clinical research site, the HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) research laboratory, and the Integration of TB in Education and Care for HIV/AIDS (ITEACH) programme -to leverage the Institute’s investment in clinical, laboratory and operational research platforms that deliver cutting edge basic science, clinical and sociobehavioral research. The PD will act as a primary resource to the South Africa based teams to troubleshoot issues and provide guidance and intervention related to new/established research protocols/grants. The PD will determine which issues need to be escalated to the Institute’s executive committee.
Key Responsibilities include several categories of program development:
Management and Administration Responsibilities
• Coordinate with international leadership, including institute Directors at multiple international institutions, to maintain existing and establish new long-term research operational success
• Proactively lead strategic planning and program development, in partnership with Ragon executive leadership and Drs. Kwon and Dong
• Coordinate with Executive Director of Finance and Executive Director regarding sub-Saharan Ragon program development and fiscal management
• Guide the Ragon Program in South Africa Steering Committee
• Take responsibility of fiscal oversight of the budgets; work with local teams and Directors of Finance at each institution to gather financial data, present status, and identify opportunities for effective cost management
• Take ownership of finances for subcontracts from US to international collaborators, and associated regulatory protocols
• Assist international program sites to build capacity and promote workforce engagement
Partnerships
• Reinforce and expand robust connection between Ragon and international investigators
• Serve as a senior liaison to the Institute’s global collaborations (FRESH, HPP and ITEACH), priority partners (AHRI, UKZN, CAPRISA, etc.), and support connections with service providers (HST, Neuberg-Global, UPL labs, etc.) and other priority stakeholders (Department of Health, etc.)
• Manage investigator relationships with current sponsors (e.g., Gates foundation, IAVI, Gilead Sciences, SANTHE, etc.) and identify opportunities for expansion
• Work with Ragon Communications team and
• Executive Director for Strategic Initiatives to build awareness and recognition of the impact of the Institute’s global initiatives
Strategic Communication
• Lead program vision with three Principal Investigators (PIs) to develop communication plans that effectively promote the international programing and r einforce the key differentiators of the initiatives including, but not limited to, the:
o Implementation of research protocols that consider biological, cultural, structural, environmental and sociobehavior factors that impact equitable enrollment of sustained benefit to study participants
o Representation of the joint interests of the PIs to promote work, develop philanthropic support, and provide regular written reports to program supporters.
o Integration of sociobehavioral research (SBR) within clinical research protocols to assess the participant experience and ensure interventions and future protocols are optimized for the priority populations for whom interventions are being developed
o Execution of enrollment equity as an integral part of clinical research studies conducted in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) to ensure inclusion of and engagement with disadvantaged or disproportionately affected populations
o Collaboration with external partners, including local and non- traditional research partners
o Engage directly in the design of programs promoting the research and capacity-building initiatives at international partner sites.
o Assume responsibility for preparation, development of the Annual Report for Institute’s work in South Africa Candidate Profile
This is a great opportunity for a highly motivated individual who:
• Has a graduate degree, with an MPH or MBA preferred.
• Has extensive experience working internationally in high HIV-burden, resource constrained settings, and able to travel to partner sites as needed, up to (90 calendar days per year).
• Will enthusiastically and independently drive the Ragon’s initiatives in sub-Saharan Africa with the three Principal Investigators (PIs), Drs. Doug Kwon, Krista Dong, and Thumbi Ndung’u as well as the Institute’s executive leadership (Executive Director of Finance and Executive Director).
• Has a demonstrated understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures.
• Is an experienced leader accustomed to working in complex environments and engaging local communities.
• Has extensive experience in HIV research and/or programming.
• Has significant leadership experience developing programs that address local need and identifying opportunities that materially contribute to the growth and performance of the Institute’s global initiatives.
• Is able to lead as a consensus builder who understands and promotes the organization’s mission.
• Is capable of independently writing executive-level reports, business correspondence, annual reports, and other professional documents.
• Has demonstrated superior interpersonal skills that enable effective interactions across a range of disciplines and levels including basic scientists and principal investigators, clinical and laboratory teams, students, healthcare providers, study participants, community partners, local businesses, and public and private sector organizations.
