Why This Role Is Important?
Patient Care Information Associate(PCIA) serves as the central source of registration and information on the in-patient Labor & Delivery unit. Under the general direction of the Nurse Director, PCIA P rovides clerical and reception support function in TRIAGE, registers patient, coordinates admission and discharge of patient and transfer from Labor & Delivery Unit. Collaborates with Police and Security for infant security and screen visitors for patient security. Answers all telephone calls and responds accordingly. Remains calm in emergency situations with the ability to function at a high level to assist the team in coordinating resources for patient care. Candidate must be sensitive to patient needs and responsive to medical and nursing staff needs. Receives patients’ relatives and visitors and directs them to the appropriate individual(s). Effective interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Provides support as needed to all OB staff. Must have excellent customer service and organizational skills. Performs full registration functions and insurance verification.

CLINCIAL SUPPORT & CLERICAL DUTIES
• Performs typing, collation, photocopying, faxing and document filing as requested.
• Prints additional labels at request of clinical staff.
• Labels Procedure Consent forms.
• Checks and empties pneumatic tube stations to prevent them from shutting down.
• Orders meals for inpatients
• Participates in the orientation of staff.
• Serves as mentor for new employees and assists in hands-on training and support
• Participates in implementation of policies, procedures and systems.
• Ensures the safety of patients and staff by appropriately screening visitors to our locked unit.
• Adheres to hospital-wide and Labor and Delivery specific visitor policies.
• Independently completes ongoing and special projects as assigned.
EMERGENCY PROCEDURES & PROTOCOLS
• Call 6-3333 for Delivery Team, Adult Code Blue or Newborn Code Blue and Rapid Response Team at the clinical team’s request.
• Page additional staff and/or Delivery Team 2 if needed/GYN Onc.
• Labels and fills out Blood Bank requisitions and arranges for tubing or pick up of blood products. Coordinates blood product pick-up and designates a “blood runner” for obstetrical emergencies.
• Ensures that all products from the Main Blood Bank sent to the Labor and Delivery unit and Operating Rooms are appropriate and correct. This also means that the cooler has been labeled with the appropriate patient’s name and room number
- Follow up with pharmacy for all Stat medications
Serves as resource for hospital Down Time procedures, utilizes Down Time registration system (BCA web registrations

Preferred: Licensed, certified or enrolled student in a Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, Mental Health Technician, or EMT accredited program, at the time of hire, OR
Candidate enrolled in a Nursing, Pre-Med, PA undergraduate program, with at least one semester of patient care rotations completed, at time of hire.
