GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Working under the general direction of a Senior Attending Technician, Lead Technician, and Associate Chief, the Pharmacy Technician may rotate throughout the various assigned areas. All technicians are responsible for answering phones, attending staff meetings, providing support to the pharmacists, checking expiration dates on medications and assisting in other areas as needed. Technicians must be able to pass both licensure and area specific competences.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direct supervision of the Clinical Trials Pharmacist, dispenses outpatient and inpatient investigational prescriptions; enters orders into the computer; files; receives investigational drug supplies; handles returns, and removes from stock investigational drugs from completed studies; dispenses outpatient study prescriptions, inventories and checks expiration dates; receives investigational drug supplies, verifies counts, and adds to inventory; delivers investigational drugs to the Sterile Product Technician Coordinator for repackaging; contacts representatives from manufacturing companies to order new supplies as necessary; acts as liaison between drug company, researcher and the pharmacy; handles returns and reviews expiration date of study drugs; removes for destruction expired drugs or study drugs returned by patient; bills study fund for encapsulations; documents and maintains records of all investigational/outpatient transactions and procedures such as: send supply of study drug to other health institutions; meet every 6 weeks with the destruction company representative for all of the controlled substances; handles and maintains records for all archival files. trains new technicians; records freezer and refrigerator temperatures daily; contacts study coordinators for prescription clarifications; assists study coordinators, nurses and patients who come to the pharmacy for research transactions; maintains database of protocols; writes letters to investigators for pharmacist to send. QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma
Valid Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy registration or ability to pass exam
Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board
Must be able pass pharmacy department competencies

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
