Massachusetts General Hospital Looking for Assistant Director – Quality, Regulatory Compliance, and Workforce Development at Boston Full Time

The Assistant Director of Quality, Regulatory Compliance, and Workforce Development reports to the Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO). The Assistant Director oversees the pharmacy departments and organizations medication-use quality, compliance, and regulatory requirements and initiatives relating to national/state agencies, sterile compounding oversight, and the MGH Control Substance Surveillance Program. They facilitate the development, implementation, and maintenance of a system that promote s desirable patient outcomes through standardization of processes, and implementation of strategic plans, best practices, cost saving initiatives and patient safety strategies. This role also includes departmental workforce development and competency programs for pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, and pharmacy leaders. Acts as a liaison with other hospital departments, MassGeneral Brigham hospitals and external organizations. Ensures quality, regulatory compliance, staff education, and performance improvement activities on an ongoing basis.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Quality and Regulatory Compliance

• Departmental and organizational responsibility for the strategic vision, goals, and initiatives associated with medication quality and regulatory compliance
• Act as a liaison between the Pharmacy Department, Compliance Office, and Hospital-wide practitioners/interdisciplinary committees to promote regulatory compliance
• Compliance of medication management throughout the organization as they are related to selection and procurement, storage and security, ordering and transcribing, preparing, dispensing and administering, monitoring and evaluation
• Oversee departmental pharmacy sterile compounding regulatory and compliance program requirements
• Develop, manages, and maintains policies and procedures that promote compliance with national and state requirements
• Responsible for Joint Commission medication management standards for the department and organization
• Provides proactive and reactive responses to regulatory agency inquires and during open comment periods for department
• Responsible for oversight and compliance with medication Risk Evaluation Mitigation Strategies (REMS)
• Develop systems that identify non-conformance, assess associated risk, and developed recommended correction and auditing plans
• Establish and maintain an internal reporting system based on performance indicators
• Conducts education and communicates with staff regarding policy changes and regulatory requirements including SkyPrep

Control Substance Surveillance

• Ultimately responsible for both organizational and departmental control substance surveillance and control substance program working directly with pharmacy, anesthesia, nursing, and police & security leaders
• Leads ongoing program process improvements and electronic surveillance system enhancements

Workforce Development

• Develop departmental workforce development and competency program for pharmacy technicians, pharmacists, and pharmacy leaders
• Oversee department career ladder program and annual program enhancements
• Support Coordinator of Technician Training and Development with the MGH Pharmacy Technician Training Program
• Work closely with MGH/MGB workforce development division

Other

• Promote the use of continuous improvement team dynamics among the pharmacy staff
• Recruits and retains competent and advanced trained pharmacy staff
• Oversees the training, development, assessment, and evaluation of pharmacy staff
• Contributes to professional/medical literature, conducts research, presents at state/national meetings, and actively participates in professional pharmacy and medical organizations
• Supports pharmacy training for pharmacy students and the MGH post-graduate pharmacy residency programs

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

• Responsible for pharmacy team of 5 FTE (1 FTE Coordinator, Sterile Compounding Compliance, 1 FTE Coordinator, Quality and Compliance, 1 FTE Coordinator, Pharmacy Technician Recruitment and Development, 2 FTE Quality Assurance Technicians)
• Provides direct supervision to and is responsible for the conduct, operations, results, and evaluation of pharmacy staff
• Coordinates with HR for the recruitment, interviewing, hiring, training, and corrective action of staff
• Assigns and prioritizes workloads based on MGH patient needs

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

• Involved in annual pharmacy budgetary process
• Responsible for utilization and identifying cost savings initiatives within area of responsibility
• Managing department workforce training and educational tools

Maintain budgetary numbers for staffing model of 5 FTEs QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor of Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree required
• Valid license to practice Pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
• Previous hospital pharmacy management/leadership experience required (minimum 3 years’ experience)
• Previous pharmacy and medication regulatory compliance experience required
• PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency with a PGY-2 specialty residency highly preferred
