Responsibilities:
Regulatory/Compliance/Quality Management
Assists with managing quality assurance activities and safety reporting system to ensure high level of performance and ensures corrections are made when any result deviates from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. Ensures that all records and reports are prepared and utilized per established policy.
Oversees quality control/ quality assurance activities in areas assigned by the Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s). With an overall awareness and understanding of quality activities in all laboratory areas.
Assigns, monitors and supervises work to ensure compliance with departmental standard operating procedures and all applicable federal, state, and accreditation agency laws, regulations, standards and policies, including health and safety regulations, as well as patient confidentiality.
Investigates and provides follow up for Safety Reports as requested.
Evaluates the laboratory’s regulatory compliance and works with leadership to implement remediation. Assists in preparing the laboratory for all regulatory reviews.
Ensures compliance with all relevant safety and infection control polices (external agencies, hospital, department, lab). May act as the department safety officer
Represents the laboratory at department and interdepartmental administrative meetings.
Human Resources Management
Ensures effective department orientation, training and ongoing competency assessments for all new employees and existing staff.
Assists the Technical Director and Supervisors with employee yearly performance evaluations
Will manage and perform the preparation and coordination of weekly work schedule for all lab areas on all shifts (day, evening & night) including weekends and holidays. Coordinates schedule adjustments required to compensate for sick calls, changing workload and other operational issues to provide adequate staffing coverage in all lab areas. May be responsible for managing employee vacation requests
Assists with review and management of lab-wide staffing, workflow and workload distribution to maintain service levels.
Training/Staff Development
Leads the development and coordination of lab-wide cross-training plan. Responsible for the development and implementation of lab area specific training curriculum and strategies in conjunction with other lab supervisors and technical specialists.
Oversees laboratory’s competency program. Leads development and implementation of internal competencies for all staff and maintains documentation of same. Monitors and oversees Microbiology’s competency tracking database.
Supports and champions health and safety education activities in conjunction with Health & Safety Officer, Lab Supervisors, Technical Director and Laboratory Directors. Recommends appropriate policies and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Responds to and promptly resolves all unsafe conditions.
May Assist in developing and maintaining laboratory’s continuing education program.
May coordinate and schedules teaching activities of MLS students, Medical Students, Residents and Fellows and other members of the staff as requested by the Technical Director and Laboratory Director(s).
Assists with LIS testing/training and development. Performs minor maintenance on computer workstations, as necessary; troubleshoots minor software and hardware malfunctions; notifies IS Service Desk of major malfunctions or problems.
Leadership/Lab Operations
Provides input to Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s) and hospital administration for performance improvement or strategic initiatives.
Responsible for inventory control and assists in management of daily inventory levels across all Microbiology departments.
Assists with analysis, development, preparation, and monitoring of laboratory budget.
Provides onsite support during internal or external emergencies as requested by hospital or department leadership.
Builds and maintains QA metrics. Monitors metrics for deviations and areas of improvement. Develops solutions in conjunction with the Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s).
Responsible for the preparation of data for budgets, quality/performance improvement projects. Manages special projects assigned by the Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s).
Attends regular weekly and/or monthly departmental meetings as requested
May serve on committees as directed by the Technical Director/Laboratory Director(s). Education:
Required: Bachelor’s Degree in areas of Laboratory Medicine, Chemistry, Biological science or Health Administration or Business administration
Preferred: Master’s in Clinical Laboratory Science, Health Administration or Organizational Leadership a plus
Experience:
External: Preferred candidate will have a minimum 5 years of progressively more responsible experience in a laboratory, administrative or organizational role. 1 year in a supervisory or management role a plus.
