GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Research Assistant I (RA) will support a study looking at discrimination in the quality of care provided to Black and/or LatinX patients boarding in the emergency department (ED). “Boarders” are those who physically remain in the ED for an extended period of time after admission to inpatient services, but prior to transfer to inpatient floors.
Identification of disparities is an essential first step towards responding to racial inequity in care delivery. These findings would help shape the interdepartmental development of effective, equity-focused solutions that are acceptable to patients of color.
This study will involve three parts: 1) a retrospective chart review, requiring extraction of medical information on both boarding and non-boarding patients admitted to inpatient medicine services; 2) in-person, online, and phone-based surveys evaluating discrimination and perceived quality of care, and 3) in-person and phone-based semi-structured interviews evaluating the patient experience of racial and ethnic minorities boarding in the ED.
The RA is expected to work within a multidisciplinary research team. An RA with a high level of professionalism and strong interpersonal skills is required to provide first line support for queries from study stakeholders and participants. The RA will possess excellent attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
Specific activities include participant recruitment (in-person, by phone, and through Patient Gateway), data extraction from the electronic medical record (EMR), data collection (through in-person and phone-based surveys and interviews), data aggregation (of survey and interview data), and data cleaning and may vary depending on the phases of the project. The RA will support all activities associated with the execution of the research plan including Institutional Review Board (IRB) amendments, progress reports to the sponsor, and organizing communication with participants and project staff. The RA will use MS Excel, REDCap, and a qualitative analysis software (e.g. Nvivo) to assist with data collection and analysis. The RA’s responsibilities will also include administrative tasks and literature searches.
