Staff Engineer – Large Language Model (LLM) Research & Development

Team Information:
This role is on the Foundational Models Team. The Large Language Models initiative is a vital part of LinkedIn Data Engineering’s Content Foundations organization. We are pushing the boundaries of AI technology at Linkedin, mirroring the transformative impact of mobile technology and the internet. Large language models are a key element of LinkedIn’s technological strategy, focusing on creating foundational models for domain adaptation and product innovation. The team is responsible for developing models capable of processing complex text and visual content, with outputs enhancing classification, ranking, and generating insightful, actionable content.
Our approach combines the use of state-of-the-art, generic large language models with LinkedIn’s unique datasets for tailored applications, emphasizing domain specialization and model evolution. Our goal is to centralize these models to enhance experiences across LinkedIn’s products, making advanced technologies accessible for a wide range of innovative applications.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Advanced LLM Development and Optimization: Design, train, and optimize large language models using state-of-the-art techniques, including Parameter Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT), Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT), RLHF (Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback), Direct Preference Optimization (DPO).
2. Cross-Product Integration: Integrate LLMs into LinkedIn’s products and services through collaboration with product AI teams, aligning with our mission to create economic opportunities and enhance user experiences.
3. Innovative Research: Conduct cutting-edge research on novel LLM architectures and training methods, focusing on applications in professional networking and business contexts.
4. Performance Evaluation and Responsible AI: Develop robust methods to evaluate LLM performance, ensuring ethical AI practices that reflect LinkedIn’s standards.
5. Leadership and Collaboration: Lead and collaborate with a team of engineers and researchers, fostering innovation and aligning with LinkedIn’s AI strategy and vision.
6. Community Engagement: Engage with the AI community through publications, conferences, and open source contributions.

The pay range for this role is $190,000 – $255,000. Actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.
