Position Description
The FIU Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts (HNWSOM) invites
applications for a fulltime, nine-month, tenure earning Assistant Professor of Music Education beginning in Fall 2023.
Responsibilities and Expectations:
Develop and teach courses in the undergraduate and graduate Music Education
programs; mentor and supervise student teaching interns and graduate research projects; collaborate with faculty across the HNWSOM and
others in pursuing external funding in support of scholarly activities; develop and maintain a regional and national profile within the
profession; engage in scholarly and creative activities; actively engage in departmental recruitment activities; possess effective
administrative and communication skills.
Required Qualifications: Successful candidates must hold the PhD or
EdD degree in Music Education or a related area by the time of the appointment. They must demonstrate a record of scholarly publication or
the potential to do so at a level that will merit tenure; show a minimum of three years of experience teaching in K-12 band, choir, or
orchestra settings; and articulate knowledge of current trends in Music Education.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates who also show (1) evidence of excellence in conducting instrumental or choral ensembles at the
secondary level, (2) experience teaching university courses and supervising student research, (3) experience and/or willingness to design
and implement online and hybrid courses for undergraduate and graduate students, (4) experience and/or willingness to mentor minorities, or
other underrepresented student groups.

The FIU Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music & Performing Arts (HNWSOM) is comprised of
240 students and 50 full-time and part-time faculty. It offers B.M. and M.M. degrees in composition, performance, music business, and music
technology; a B.A. degree in Music; and a B.M. and M.S. in music education. The SOM produces and presents a full performance calendar in the
Herbert & Nicole Performing Arts Center on FIU’s main campus and throughout the South Florida community. The School of Music is
one of the eight integrated units of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, including the Caplin School of Journalism +
Media; the School of Communication; the School of Architecture, including the departments of Architecture, Interior Architecture and
