Role Overview
The Director, Logistics & Transportation will be responsible for all aspects of outbound finished vehicle shipping execution. This leadership position requires an experienced professional with the ability to program manage all logistics requirements for vehicle distribution both domestically and internationally. The successful candidate will have spent considerable time launching new plants and/or new products in an automotive manufacturing environment. This position partners with Sales, Production Control, Field Service, Quality, Manufacturing, Facilities, IT, Packaging, Engineering, Finance, Trade Compliance, Program Management, Indirect Procurement, Regulatory Affairs, and our carrier base. The ideal candidate will exhibit a can-do attitude and approach the opportunity with determination. Candidates will be expected to demonstrate excellence in their respective fields, to possess the ability to learn quickly and to strive for perfection within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
Direct all outbound finished vehicle logistics operations, including transportation, exception management, damage measurement and claims, data analytics, and trade compliance for a worldwide outbound automotive supply chain
Define 3PL, asset owner, and carrier strategy to scale operations while optimizing cost
Oversee outbound finished vehicle yard management process at the plant
Oversee outbound cost metrics
Prepare and manage the department budget, capital and corporate expenses related to finished vehicle logistics, cost forecasting, and act as key stakeholder in negotiation of logistics purchasing contracts
Drive a corporate cross-functional consensus behind a shared vision of finished vehicle logistics and distribution
Drive planning for adequate carrier capacity and storage space to keep pace with volume growth
Direct the teams responsible for execution for delivery of services to the end customer
Anticipate challenges and disruptions to transportation flow and design mitigation strategies
Drive company compliance with logistics processes and global trade regulations
Define scope and priorities of the analytics team to measure all relevant aspects of outbound logistics
Manage project logistics as directed (show or prototype cars, VIP shipments, etc.)
Develop and automate metrics KPIs reflecting department spend
Define strategies, suppliers, and flows
Drive site specific requirements at port(s), rail yard(s), hubs, etc. to support the most efficient logistics operations possible
Define and develop finished vehicle logistics solutions that optimize speed, cost, and quality
Define and drive development and implementation of needed processes and systems
Evaluate claims and develop vehicle quality initiatives
Identify ongoing operational process and staffing needs to support logistics operations
Identify and hire a world class team of logistics professionals to lead operations
Manage Global Finished Vehicle Logistics Operations
Work with internal customers to optimize and meet requirements (Sales, Delivery, Fleet, Field Service, Marketing, Engineering)
Participate in carrier management processes, such as selection, qualification, SOW, and performance evaluation
Implement specific customer requirements, such as internal reporting or customized transportation metrics
Design models for use in evaluating logistics programs or services
Collaborate with other departments to integrate logistics with business systems or processes
Analyze the financial impact of proposed logistics’ changes, such as routing, shipping modes, product volumes or mixes, or carriers
Recruit and build a high-performing outbound finished vehicle team
Scale team, processes, and systems to meet growth projections
Lead negotiations with suppliers or internal customers to improve supply chain efficiency or sustainability
Requirements
15+ years relevant experience with automotive logistics, transportation, and global trade process and procedures, preferably in a high-volume environment
10+ years of related automotive industry experience and LEAN manufacturing
10+ years direct leadership experience
Strong knowledge of multi-modal logistics pricing models (air, rail, truck, ocean, customs brokerage)
Strong computer proficiency in MS Office applications and SAP experience
Proven experience helping organizations scale operationally from start-up to maturity.
Proven track record of exceeding goals in a service-focused industry; automotive expertise is not required.
Demonstrated success and thought leadership in operational excellence.
Proven experience in strategic and organizational development, including the ability to attract, develop and retain world class talent.
Ability to problem solve, prioritize multiple projects, and adhere to business-critical deadlines.
Successful track record of leadership in a cross-matrix structure.
Bachelor’s Degree preferred in Supply Chain, Logistics, Engineering, or related field. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
