Franklin Templeton began the decade under the leadership of Jenny Johnson, who became President and CEO in February of 2020 and led the acquisition of several companies to propel the firm into a new phase of growth, including Benefit Street Partners (BSP), a leading credit-focused alternative asset management firm investing across a range of illiquid and liquid credit strategies and the largest and most significant acquisition in the company’s history, Legg Mason. Legg Mason and its specialist investment managers (SIMs) added differentiated capabilities to Franklin Templeton’s existing investment strategies, bringing notable leadership and strength in core fixed income, active equities, multi-asset solutions, as well as key growth areas in alternatives and separately managed accounts (SMAs). A concentrated focus on alternatives led to the more recent announcement of Franklin Templeton’s acquisition of Lexington Partners, a leader in secondary private equity and co-investments and the acquisition of Alcentra, a private credit and debt specialist bringing the firm’s total alternative assets under management (AUM) to $260 billion globally. Growing industry demand for customization and personalization led to the announcement of Franklin Templeton’s acquisition of O’Shaughnessy Asset Management, LLC, a leading quantitative asset management firm providing factor-based and Custom Indexing solutions that adds to our offerings in the high growth SMA industry, where we are already one of the largest providers attributing to over $100 billion in AUM within the US. Franklin has made significant advancements in ETFs since their introduction to the market in 2016, attributing to $11 billion in ETFs for the US and $15 billion globally in both active and passive solutions across the firm’s various SIMs. By the end of 2022, the total AUM for Franklin Templeton totaled $1.4 trillion.
