Camp Chewonki is a nature-based overnight camp and expedition-based youth leadership program for boys, girls, and non-binary children. Overnight campers are aged 8-15 and spend 10 days or 3 weeks at camp. The overnight camp program focuses on building cabin community, building skills and knowledge in a core curriculum, and learning about backcountry travel on multi-day remote cabin trips. Participants in our Leadership Expeditions are aged 14-18 and spend 3 weeks or 5 weeks learning leadership skills, remote travel, and a robust sense of self.
Camp Chewonki Camp Counselors / Cabin Leaders are kind, empathetic, thoughtful, and fun adults who are responsible for caring for the health and well-being of a cabin full of campers for the summer. Cabin Leaders live in cabins with 8 campers and 1 other leader. They help campers adjust to camp life, develop community with their cabinmates, navigate the daily schedule, and develop the skills to be successful anywhere. In addition to supporting campers’ daily routines, Cabin Leaders work as teaching assistants in activities and collaborate with trip leaders to facilitate multi-day remote trips for their cabin. Ideal candidates will have a passion for working with children, spending time in the outdoors, and a dedication to lifelong learning.
Cabin Leaders will work with Puffin Program or Full Session cabins. The Puffin Program is a 10-day introductory experience for campers aged 8-11. Once the Puffin Program session ends, Puffin Cabin leaders will become activity and cabin support staff providing additional coverage. Full Session Cabin Leaders in the Osprey age group are responsible for facilitating their own remote cabin trip and are required to have additional experience and certification.
Uphold the Chewonki’s mission and values
Live in cabins with campers and another cabin leader
Teach and support campers in daily living routines
Facilitate mealtime curriculum in the dining hall
Hold responsibility for the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of participants; this includes:
Develop healthy and appropriate relationships with participants
Conduct daily check-ins with participants
Manage risk and maintain the safety of participants
Provide direct supervision of participants as assigned
Assist with the facilitation of at least two remote trips; this includes:
Collaborate with trip leaders in preparation for, facilitation of, and wrap-up of the trip
Osprey Cabin Leaders are responsible for their own remote trips
Deliver effective and engaging instruction in the curriculum of core activity areas as a teaching assistant
Plan and execute free time activities, evening activities, and special events
Be an active member of the Chewonki community; e.g. participate in a camp set up and take down
Practice professional presentation and communication with participants and their families, co-workers, and the public
Complete all necessary paperwork, i.e. incident reports, camper reports, trip reports
Instill joy and enthusiasm into the daily life of camp

Risk Management: Cabin Leaders demonstrate an understanding of effective risk-benefit analysis in an outdoor environment. Decision-making should balance safety, learning, and fun with an emphasis on conservative judgment when evaluating the intersection of environmental and human risk factors.
Interpersonal: Cabin Leaders practice clear and concise communication with participants and co-workers. Working with children requires creating safe and inclusive spaces where their identities and experiences are seen and affirmed. We are looking for leaders who can deliver, receive, and integrate feedback. We are also looking for people who are ready to have a lot of fun and infuse camp with a sense of joy for life.
Technical: Cabin Leaders are comfortable and competent in remote outdoor environments. Basic knowledge and skill in a core activity area and remote travel are preferred. Osprey Cabin Leaders will have experience in remote travel, personal or professional.
Educational and Leadership: Cabin Leaders will have experience in one of the fields of education, childcare, outdoor recreation, or other child-focused industry. Most importantly, successful candidates are dedicated to lifelong learning and are willing and able to take ownership of their development as outdoor education professionals.
