Black Spruce Dog Sledding is home to 45 Iditarod sled dogs, and 2 Iditarod mushers, Jeff Deeter and KattiJo Deeter. In addition to long distance racing, we also operate a very popular dog sledding tour operation. Fairbanks attracts visitors from around the world, seeking the northern lights. Most visitors also include dog sledding on their list of things to do while in Alaska, and Black Spruce Dog Sledding is consistently ranked as the #1 Outdoor Attraction for visitors in Fairbanks. Our tours are well-loved for being authentic, personalized, private/small group, and extremely hands-on. Our kennel is renowned in the state for our excellent dog care and training. All of our dogs are friendly, outgoing, indoor/outdoor savvy, and have excellent voice recall. *Check us out on Instagram!*
We are looking to add 1-2 people (couples OK!) to our kennel for the 2022-2023 season. New hands would help with all tasks related to caring for our dogs, running tours, and living off-grid in Alaska. New recruits would be well trained as dog sledding tour guides, with the opportunity to do longer training runs, camping trips, or even try racing. This is an awesome opportunity for the right person to experience the beauty of Alaska, and learn all about dog mushing. And get paid for it!
The sled dog life is a constant blending of work/play/business/personal. Employees may be asked to help with a variety of random responsibilities, depending on the day. The expectation is that we’re all working together, as hard as we can, to keep everything running smoothly. Everything we do is aimed at providing the best possible life for our dogs. Job responsibilities will include everything obvious from feeding, watering, scooping poop, walking dogs (summer), and running dogs (winter), to chopping fire wood, clearing trails, painting dog houses, landscaping (summer) and shoveling snow (winter). Basically: if it needs done, we’ll teach you how to do it! No experience required.
Work would begin this summer (we’re flexible re: start date), and continue through the fall and into winter, with the season ending sometime in May 2023. The most intense season of work is from November through March, and employees should expect to stay in Fairbanks during the holidays.
Base compensation includes a weekly salary plus a room and board package (private housing + utilities + $200/week food stipend). Check out photos of the cabin on our Airbnb page. Wages are negotiable, and dependent on experience. Wages will increase throughout the year with competency and responsibility.
