Is an internship passionate about changing the world’s energy future intriguing to you? If so, we might have just the opportunity you’re looking for!
Idaho National Laboratory’s is seeking a graduating senior or graduate student to help develop and demonstrate plate fuel capabilities in the Bison nuclear fuel performance code. Bison is a nuclear fuel performance code that has been developed primarily by Idaho National Laboratory. The code is applicable to a range of fuel types with validated capabilities. The department is now implementing plate-type fuel capabilities into the code, including material models, and plans to analyze plate fuel processing history and in-reactor performance. This assignment would last approximately six months and can be extended as needed. The intern will work closely with the Bison team and will support development, implementation, and testing of individual thermo-mechanical models. The models include elasticity, plasticity, neutron hardening, swelling, creep, thermal conductivity, and relevant degradation models. The intern will run simulations of plate fuel by combining these individual material models. These calculations will occur on one of INL’s computing clusters. Calculated results will be compared to results from other FEA software and to experimental data. Desired skills: Familiarity with Bison, Linux/Mac OS, C++, git, FEM, and mechanical and thermal material models. Familiarity with other analysis software, such as Abaqus with user defined subroutines, will also be advantageous, although not required.
