ABOUT ARCTIC BASECAMP
Stitching Arctic Basecamp Foundation is a non-profit science communication organization focused on Arctic risks. On a mission to “speak science to power, the foundation aims to expand the global reach of its advocacy and research on how polar risks are impacting the global climate crisis. Through the latest science and data, Arctic Basecamp Foundation is committed to raising, supporting, and promoting global awareness of the global risks associated with Arctic climate change. The team believes that ‘what happens in the Arctic doesn’t stay in the Arctic. Thus, they aim to encourage bold climate action through various campaigns that are released on multiple platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and our website.
The Arctic Basecamp team consists of approximately 20 world-class Arctic scientists, communications experts, and admin specialists. With the aim to increase awareness of the global risks associated with Arctic climate change, they work with global scientists and world-class organizations. Since their inception, they have successfully hosted four high-level events at the World Economic Forum in Davos (2017 2020), along with our online activation of the 2021 Davos Agenda. Furthermore, they have also recorded presence at the UN Climate Week in New York in 2019, COP26, the 2022 Arctic Circle Assembly, and recently COP27. In May 2022, we launched the Arctic Risk Platform.
ABOUT THE ARCTIC RISK PLATFORM ARP
The dramatic changes in the Arctic region are a clear warning sign of the impending global climate emergency. Yet there remains a significant gap in awareness and in-depth understanding of the magnitude and breadth of these global risks from Arctic change, such as extreme weather, storm surges, global sea level rise, and changes to global precipitation and snowfall patterns. There is also a large disconnect between scientific monitoring of early warning signs of the impending risks from Arctic change and discussions by policymakers and other global decision-makers. Key gaps remain in the availability of relevant and real-time risk analytics based on this information that is needed by top decision-makers in government and industry, journalists, and engaged citizens. The Arctic risk platform project was launched in COP26 to provide comprehensive, curated data sets for in-depth risk analysis to policymakers and other target groups from businesses, media, and the informed public. The Arctic Risk Platform provides a compelling new digital structure for information flows on global climate risks, amplified through campaigns, events, and science briefings. The Arctic Risk Platform presents digital visualizations for key concepts such as Arctic Amplification and a risk dashboard of near real-time data for early warning signs (Arctic Alerts) on Temperature Anomalies, Land/Sea Ice, Greenland warnings, Arctic Greening Index, Early detection or “Zombie Fires in permafrost, Polar Vortex patterns, and extreme weather, Black carbon particulate matter.
