The Caribou Hotel, owned and operated by American Village of Alaska, Inc. is seeking to fill a critical, year-round position of hotel front desk clerk, located in the Copper River Valley (Glennallen) of Alaska. The Copper River Valley is the gateway to Alaska’s interior.
Hunting, fishing, and hiking opportunities are plentiful in this rural, outdoorsy setting. The Caribou Hotel is located on the same property as the Caribou Grill (also owned and operated by American Village of Alaska, Inc.) and is about 10 miles away from one of the entrances of Wrangell St. Elias National Park, which is the largest National Park in the United States.
Enjoy breathtaking views of mountains, glacier-fed rivers, and aurora borealis (northern lights are typically only visible in the winter months). The summer months are filled with lots of sunlight (very little darkness) while the winters are dark and cold (although the winter does have an adequate amount of sunlight here in Glennallen). The summer months are typically mild, while the winters can get very cold with lots of snow. Be advised that winter temperatures can get as low as -20°F, -30°F, -40°F, -50°F, and even (on rare occasions) as low as -60°F. Glennallen is relatively remote, but it is on the Alaska road system. The location of the restaurant is about 180 driving miles from Anchorage, AK via the Glenn Highway and about 120 driving miles from Valdez, Alaska via the Richardson Highway. Valdez is the closest city. Main roads and highways are relatively well-maintained by the Alaska Department of Transportation, even during winter months.
The successful candidate for the position of hotel front desk clerk will be adventurous, flexible, and will have a can-do attitude. Living and working in Glennallen, Alaska presents a unique set of both challenges and rewards. The Caribou Hotel is looking to hire an experienced front desk clerk immediately (as of March 28th, 2022). Some experience is preferred, but the hotel staff is willing to train a candidate at the entry level who has a good attitude, can work fast, and be willing to learn. Candidates who are hired from outside Alaska will likely fly into the Ted Stevens International Airport (also known as Anchorage International Airport). It is also possible to drive to Glennallen from the contiguous continental United States by going through Canada. If flying into Anchorage to begin work, there is a shuttle service that goes to Glennallen three days a week: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Employee lodging is provided at the Caribou Hotel, located on the same property as the Caribou Grill, at the steeply discounted rate of $20.00/night. Other housing options also exist. Employee shift meals are available to employees at a 50% discount.
Those with active substance abuse issues need not apply – past issues are okay, as long as they stay there. Criminal history will be considered on a case by case basis. Applicants may be subject to a background check and drug screening after hire. We do not screen for marijuana/cannabis, as it is lawful for recreational use in the State of Alaska. However, employees of American Village of Alaska who come into work under the influence of intoxicating substances may be subject to immediate termination. Illegal drug use is grounds for immediate termination.
