As the Silver Bay Homestead Tour Camp Host you will be responsible for setting the scene of the Homestead as guests disembark from the sightseeing vessel. In the morning you will take a small boat out to the venue, start a fire, prepare the snack for the tour, and make sure everything is neat and ready before guests arrive. There are typically multiple tours per day, so in between groups you will be responsible for cleaning up and resetting things at the Homestead for the next group to show up. This is a unique position in that it requires someone who a can deliver a strong storytelling performance, oversee and maintain the homestead site, and operate a small vessel to and from the venue each day.
Essential Desired Qualities & Qualifications
Comfortable speaking and performing in front of groups of people. Any combination of on stage, storytelling, narrative tour guiding, or public speaking experience is a plus.
Comfortable operating / riding a small craft vessel for transportation to and from the Homestead venue.
Ability to learn extensive narrative information, and use that knowledge to create a charismatic and engaging storytelling performance.
Enjoy / feel confident starting campfires 🙂
Background or strong interest in natural & human history
Proficient in record keeping and organization
Responsible and able to work with minimal supervision
Reliable, self-motivated, honest, enthusiastic, gregarious, enjoys being outdoors.
Willing to operate outside in variable weather conditions including rain and moderate wind.
Team-oriented with well-developed interpersonal and leadership skills.
Strong communication and conversation skills.
Must be physically fit to perform tasks such as moving firewood, loading and unloading supplies, walking up and down ramps, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Must possess First Aid & CPR certification (prior to hosting paying guests).
Willing to work variable work hours, including long-days, evenings and weekends.
Able to take constructive feedback.
Able to take direction and execute tasks as directed.
Able to recognize and fill their specific role as part of a contributor to team efficiency and morale.
Camp Host Responsibilities
Operate / ride the crew vessel out to the Homestead venue in the morning, and back to town at the end of the day. Transport full / empty propane tanks, water jugs, and other supplies as needed.
Set up the Homestead site at the beginning of each day, ensuring that supplies are in position to be successful considering the number of planned guests for that day. Allow for changes in expected guest numbers. Get a campfire started as conditions allow.
Greet guests as they arrive at the homestead, and serve as the primary “show” of the venue – tell stories around the campfire, supplement / enhance informational displays, make conversations, mingle, entertain. Assist tour vessel deckhands with serving snacks and beverages.
In general, provide an educational and fun experience through delivery of informative narrative, good story-telling and appropriate conversation (adjust to suit groups’ communication styles, or “read the room”).
From the time guests arrive at the site to the time they leave, work with tour vessel deckhands to ensure guest safety – trip and fall hazards, keeping guests within safe boundaries, etc.
Work with and lead deckhands in maintaining best practices for bear safety.
In between times that guests are at the homestead, clean up the venue and reset supplies for the next group.
Assist other crew and potential customers however the situation warrants.
Track, record, and communicate to the tour vessel captain / management any issues or repairs needed at the venue.
Coordinate with the tour vessel captain to track supply inventory and communicate supply needs.
Compensation & Benefits
DOE, at least $20.00/hour, plus end-of-season $2 per hour worked contract fulfillment bonus. $300 each way travel reimbursement
While not guaranteed income, hosts can generally expect to receive gratuities from guests for a job well done.
Company-arranged, seasonal housing assistance may be available to interested employees.
Positions are seasonal full-time or part-time. Covered by Workman’s Comp Insurance.
Note: Preference is given to candidates available to work the entire season, without interruption.
