Position description
The Cobian-Iniguez laboratory (https://www.cobianresearch.com/) at UC Merced is seeking applicants for a postdoctoral position focused on transdisciplinary research in wildland and wildland-urban-interface fire. The postdoctoral scholar will contribute to the development of collaborative public science communication strategies with a focus on addressing gaps in bilingual fire science communications. They will conduct integrated basic and applied fire science research in the Cobian-Iniguez laboratory at UC Merced. Research tasks may include laboratory scale fire behavior experiments and/or applications of machine learning to fire data. The postdoctoral scholar will contribute to the development of a science distribution network with key Spanish-speaking stakeholder groups on both sides of the US Mexico border. They will contribute to the development of bilingual content for the California Fire Science Consortium website. The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to supervise and manage undergraduate and graduate students, contribute to the preparation of grant proposals and, publish in peer reviewed journals.
Qualifications
* A Doctoral degree (in engineering, environmental science, ecology, geography, fire science, forestry or a related field.
* Familiarity with quantitative research methods
* Experience publishing peer reviewed articles and presenting at technical conferences.
* Bilingual In Spanish and English
* Advanced experience with experimental methods, statistical methods and/or data science.
* Proficient in geo-processing software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS)
* Advanced experience in Python and/or R programming language
* Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
* Prior experience with wildfire and/or wildland-urban-interface fire research.
