The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for developing and managing diverse audience journeys, end to end. They develop and implement brand, marketing, and communications strategies to unite and engage our various audience groups with Carolina Performing Arts (CPA) in meaningful ways.
As a key leader in the External Affairs Department, the Director of Marketing and Communications leads the Marketing & Communications team. Reporting to the Director of External Affairs (DEA), this position leads the marketing, press and media relations, brand and design, communications, digital engagement, visitor experience, audience development, ticketing and box office, and earned revenue analytics. Working with the DEA, this position will develop strong, effective strategies, key messaging, storytelling, and engagement opportunities for audiences, the media, key influencers, corporate partners, donors, and artistic, engagement and promoting partners.
This position develops and implements audience strategy, reaching new, diverse communities and building deep, collaborative partnerships across the campus and off-campus community. They develop communication and marketing strategies consistent with our mission and values, highlighting stories about the programs, opportunities, people, and impact of CPA.
The Director of Marketing and Communications will also lead the team in developing CPA’s digital engagement and communications strategy, growing the profile and impact of our online and social platforms, with the goal of creating opportunities to deepen engagement with audiences, in addition to promotional content creation, and enhancing visitor experience through digital platforms.
This position is responsible for generating $1M+ in ticket sales annually, managing a team of 6 full-time staff and a smaller cohort of part-time student staff. Success in this role requires a collaborative, creative, and data-informed approach. The most successful candidate will be agile, strategic, steady, and have experience building and mentoring new teams.

PREFERRED- 8+ years of experience in leading marketing, public relations, or closely related teams. Ability to respond positively to change as evidenced by adapting approaches, goals, and methods to achieve solutions and results in dynamic situations.- Leading teams successfully through change, delivering outcomes while also building up the resiliency and skillset of teammates.- Experience working with diverse undergraduate and graduate/professional student, faculty, or staff communities such as exist at Carolina, which reflect an array of ethnic, racial, cultural, faith, gender, and other identities.- Broad knowledge of and passion for impact-focused organizations.- Knowledge of Tessitura CRM or an equivalent ticketing system.
